baby

Well…that was a long time to stay tuned :). Looks like my plan to make 25 items in 50 days is not going to happen, since it seems this baby wants to come early and I’m now on couch rest till next week. In contrary to her last-last minute mom, she’s more ready I guess :). Still have to install the car seat, finish the bassinet, the nursery (not that important for now), my suitcase wasn’t packed (now it’s about 90% packed) and some other things. Buy lots of stuff (I always thought babies didn’t need much, but in week 31 we only had about 10% of the must-have list, haha). Plenty of stuff to do, but I can do a lot while sitting on the couch (sorting fabric, yarn, papers, doing laundry).

I guess highest priority was finishing the bassinet mattress and crib sheets. Luckily I had been working on those before being put on rest, haha.

We borrowed this bassinet from a friend and to reduce SIDS risk I decided not to re-use the mattrass. The bassinet is an odd size, so a new mattress is not for sale anywhere, most are way too small, which is dangerous too.

Making one was the only solution. I bought 1″ high density foam at JoAnns for a total of $9, traced the old one and cut it. 1″ foam seems thin but high density says it all, it’s as thick as the Restoration Hardware original.

I made a flannel cover for it. Internet suggests using vinyl backed flannel to make a waterproof cover, but no way I’m using PVC on a baby mattress (off-gassing, you know). I opted to use a friendlier PEVA (PVC-free, chlorine-free, biodegradable) shower curtain from Ikea, but I’m just not sure if something plastic-y will make the mattress sweaty and noisy.

So I made a flannel cover and will use a thick flannel sheet (molton I think?? the US doesn’t know this word) on top of it. Hope that works. Otherwise, I’ll need to go back to JoAnn again after the first accident :P.

Here’s the mattrass and the cover. The cover required a lot of handstitching and it’s not as snug as I wanted. Hope it will work. I serged the edges, just to make myself proud and I like a professional finish.
